Dia island
Dia island is located about 7 nautical miles north of Heraklion. It is 5 km long, 3 km wide (about 12 sq km), 220 m high and is accessible only by boats.
Beside Dia lay two islets, Paximadi and Petalidi. In the south side of the island there are five small coves: Agios Georgios, Kapari, Panagia, Agrielia and Aginara. In the north there are rocky cliffs up to 60 meters high.
Agia Pelagia Complex of Bays
Agia Pelagia is a seaside fishing village located 23 km (by car) or 13 km (by boat) north – west of Heraklion. The village is built in the center of the homonymous amphitheatric bay.
Agia Pelagia bay is actually complex of 8 wind – protected, formidable, sandy coves named Mades, Vlychada, Lygaria, Agia Pelagia, Fylakes, Kladissos, Psaromoura and Mononaftis.
Elounda Bay Area
Elounda bay area lies 11 km north – west of Agios Nikolaos.
It is known for its wind – protected sandy coves, rocky coastlines, the beautiful village of Elounda itself, the fishing harbor, the sunken city of Olous (one of the most important cities during the Minoan era) and of course for the sensational Spinalonga islet.
Elounda bay includes some of the finest hotels and resorts in the world.
Executive villas, bungalows, royal suites of all kinds. Greek style is paired with modern design, exceptional comfort and imperial glamour.
Spinalonga Islet
Laying exactly at the mouth of Elounda bay, just opposite Plaka, Spinalonga stands as the natural guardian of the huge harbor (see image gallery). During the Venetian occupation (1211 – 1669) the whole islet became an impressive and highly effective fortress, so effective that permitted to the Venetians to occupy Elounda bay until 1715, almost 50 years after the Ottomans had conquered Crete (1669).
From 1903 to 1957 Spinalonga was known as the island of the outcasts because Greek authorities decided to establish an isolated colony for lepers and political prisoners.
Today Spinalonga is the most popular archaeological site in Crete after Knossos as thousands of tourists visit the picturesque islet every summer.
Agios Nikolaos Bay Area
Agios Nikolaos is an exclusively beautiful town surrounding the homonymous, small yet impressive lake. This place is truly scenic with a lot of neoclassical buildings, restaurants, bars, shops, and intense nightlife.
Most of the seashores in and around the town, rocky or sandy, are wind – protected and outstandingly gorgeous.
The atmosphere is cosmopolitan and extravagant as a bunch of the oldest top – luxurious resorts of Greece, some of them built more than fifty years ago, are located here.
A feeling of leisure, nostalgia, and romance hovers all over the place.
